The Effect of Digital Game-Based and Worksheet-Based Vocabulary Exercises on Vocabulary Retention and Intrinsic Motivation
Abstract
Worksheets serve as an effective technique for enhancing vocabulary retention. However, the evolving learning preferences of today's digital natives and the challenges they encounter have underscored the importance of integrating technology to increase their motivation. Hence, this study aims to compare the potential effects of digital game-based vocabulary exercises utilizing two platforms (Memrise and Easy Notecards) with those of worksheet-based exercises on vocabulary retention and intrinsic motivation. This is quasi-experimental research with a control group employing a pre-test and a post-test. The study involved 44 B2-level university students learning English as a foreign language. The data were collected via a standardized vocabulary retention test and Intrinsic Motivation Inventory and analysed via SPSS. The results indicate a significant improvement in both groups regarding vocabulary retention. However, statistically significant differences in post-test scores were not observed suggesting similar effectiveness for both techniques. As for intrinsic motivation, results indicate a moderate level for both groups yet not a statistically significant difference except for the perceived competency factor. The findings imply that both vocabulary exercises can be used for effective vocabulary teaching providing similar intrinsic motivation outcomes.
